Borderland Threads

Weaving migration stories

Borderland Threads weaves stories across countries and cultures. We use arpilleras (embroidered patchworks), testimonios (testimonial narratives), and different artistic media to tell stories of migration to Chile.

Borderland Threads is a research project that seeks new collaborative ways of learning about migration in Chile. Since 2022, we have organized arpillera workshops with groups of migrant women living in the country. The conversations that unfold and the experiencies that are shared in these workshops open up new ways of thinking about migration. We do not want this to be translated into only academic data, so we look for different creative ways to share participants' stories and bridge the specificity of their experiences with a wider audience.

We have produced two animated films that explore the themes discussed in the workshops, as well as a song and videoclip that complement the children's book La mejor casa del mundo The best house in the world (The best house in the world).

The short film Hilos Fronterizos has been part of the official selection of 15 film festivals in 13 countries.

La mejor casa del mundo (Mis Raíces Publishing) is inspired by the stories of migration and motherhood shared in our workshops.

The arpilleras and testimonios from Hilos Fronterizos have travelled to different places in Chile and abroad. It is estimated that around 3,000 people have visited our exhibitions.
